You and the other PNWD Chalice Lighters have combined hundreds of small acts of love to provide a grant of nearly $17,000 to the UU Congregation of Whidbey Island, Freeland, Washington . Thank you for your continued generosity.
The third and final call of the 2009-2010 church year is to help the Bellingham, Washington, Unitarian Fellowship obtain necessary furnishings and appliances for their new social hall and kitchen.
The larger building expansion project will significantly increase the congregation’s capacity for growth, with
- additional RE classrooms
- much needed office space, and
- the new social hall and kitchen.
The new social hall and kitchen will serve many important purposes: community building and community outreach are a big part of Bellingham ’s spiritual life and the kitchen and hall are central to both. In addition, RE classes use the kitchen as a part of their study; for example, they made soup and bread while studying hunger and homelessness issues. It should not surprise you that their building budget has been stretched thin by a combination of unanticipated costs that depleted their contingency fund, the defection of a nonprofit organization that was to be their kitchen partner, and higher financing costs because of the credit crisis. The Chalice Lighter grant will go a long way toward completing this key part of their project.
Bellingham has asked for a grant of $26,300. Combined with savings and sweat equity, that amount will allow them to make these needed improvements and continue their steady growth.
