Dear Chalice Lighter,
Once again your continuing generosity has made it possible for a neighboring Unitarian Universalist congregation to finance a needed project. We recently sent over $18,000 to the UU Community Church of Washington County in Hillsboro, Oregon, so that they could correct a deficiency in their historic church that the sellers had failed to properly address.
Several years ago we established a supplemental fund to offer grants for special needs. We recently awarded a $3,000 grant from this fund to Free Church Unitarian in Blaine, Washington. Our “border church” makes their wonderful old building available for community events; and this special grant allowed them to improve their entrance by creating a more accessible and welcoming presence. Funds are still available for other special needs that may arise in our congregations.
The second call this year is for the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ashland, Oregon. Like many UU congregations in our region, they are at a challenging transitional phase in their development. They plan a broad-based approach to help them diversify their congregation by attracting additional younger members, enhancing their building to make it more welcoming and efficient, using the media to make their presence known to the larger community, and improving their nurturing of visitors and new members through the hiring of a membership coordinator. The congregation recently called a new minister and is ready to make its presence known in Ashland and neighboring communities.
